KOB Audio started life in 1987, selling custom-made car audio interface leads and specialised dual insulated phono cable in the days when every car audio manufacturer had their own ways of connecting stuff. Many used DIN plugs but the pins hardly ever matched from one brand to the next, and signal levels varied wildly.
Kevin O’Byrne, with friend and electronics engineer Jim Forrest, developed and marketed a line of car audio interface leads under the brand name of Audiolinx. These were used by many of the leading installers of the day, including Mike Wells Car Stereo Systems in London, The Sound Gallery in High Wycombe, Ray Smith Car Audio of Edinburgh, Audiocar in London, ABC Car Radio of Newbury, Wentworth Car Radios of Virginia Water in Surrey, and Huets Car Audio in Hove, to name just a few.
Kevin later moved into the world of consumer magazines, writing and editing. Jim successfully continued with his electronics servicing business, JF Associates, which also handled independent testing of review products for several home hi-fi and car audio magazines in the UK.
